Latest Violence in Gaza and the Western Hypocrisy

Story Highlights
  • The conflict since October 7, 2023, has led to over 33,000 deaths, predominantly women and children, with attacks ongoing.
  • The international community and human rights advocates have been largely ineffective, failing to enforce humanitarian laws.
  • The United States displays double standards by supporting Israel militarily while condemning other nations for similar actions.
  • There is a glaring inconsistency in how international law is applied, with Israel not facing the same repercussions as other nations for violating UN resolutions.

On October 7, 2023, Hamas launched a devastating missile attack on Israeli territory, citing the following reasons: a growth in Israeli illegal settlements on Palestinian property; blockade of the Gaza Strip; and Israeli violence against the Palestinian people. Israel declared war on Gaza in retaliation to the attack, seizing land, water, and other resources in the process. This was done despite the fact that Gaza was just being attacked, and innocent people were the victims. Over 33,000 individuals have died as a result of these attacks, the majority of whom were women and children. The violence in Gaza is currently ongoing.

As Israeli atrocities escalate, the global community and self-proclaimed peace and human rights defenders remain ineffective, merely acting as powerless observers. These attacks, targeting the civilian rights and properties, blatantly violate international humanitarian law. The inaction of international bodies and advocates exposes a troubling failure to uphold their professed principles, raising urgent questions about their true commitment to justice and protection for all. The disparity between their rhetoric and actions undermines their credibility and highlights a significant gap in the enforcement of international law, revealing a profound indifference to the suffering of civilians in conflict zones.

The role of the United States in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is quite ambiguous. On one hand, it professes to support a two-state solution for Palestine; on the other, it provides Israel with $3.8 billion in annual military aid. This duality reveals the double standards in U.S. foreign policy. For example, Russian President Vladimir Putin was quickly labelled a war criminal, yet Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu escapes such condemnation despite initiating conflict in Gaza. As a global power, the United States projects an image of inconsistency, supporting certain leaders while condemning others, thereby undermining its credibility and commitment to genuine peace and justice in international affairs.

In 2003, the USA invaded Iraq citing the presence of weapons of mass destruction (WMD) and the need to stop human rights violations. Yet, why is there no outcry over human rights, abuses in Gaza, and isn’t Israel also employing weapons of mass destruction? Following 9/11, American attacks on Afghanistan were justified as self-defence, but do Palestinians not have the same right? Moreover, Iran and Russia face international sanctions for disregarding the United Nations resolutions, so why does Israel escape similar repercussions despite violating the UN resolutions regarding a ceasefire in Gaza? This glaring inconsistency in the application of international law and human rights standards raises critical questions about the fairness and integrity of global governance and the true commitment to uphold justice for all.

These double standards reveal how international law and global institutions serve their patrons through a partial approach. The recent escalation in Gaza since October 7, 2023, has exposed the true nature of the “white man’s burden” and the ineffectiveness of international peacekeeping bodies.
